
The UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain was marred by an ugly incident, with a fan falling 26 feet to his death during the European clash on Sunday.
The fan is said to have tumbled from the aforementioned height onto seats below at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, during extra time and succumbed to his injuries despite the best efforts of medical staff.
UEFA released a statement on the tragic fall, addressing the victim’s family.
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time,” it read.
Portugal defender Nuno Mendes said the incident “casts a pall on our victory today.”
“I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died,” he added. “That has made us realize what is important in life”.
“We’re mourning the fan who died. It’s very sad news,” Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez offered.

According to Bavarian police, the victim lived in Germany but was from Romania, adding that there was nothing to suggest foul play.

“At this point, there is no evidence to contradict the hypothesis of a tragic accident,” they said in a statement.
While it’s being treated like an accident, investigations remain underway.
UEFA Nations League Final Goes The Distance

The game itself was pretty entertaining. It ended in a 2-2 draw in regulation before Portugal won 5-3 on penalties. Both teams had opportunities to win in extra time, but neither of them could bury their chances, forcing the fixture to go the distance.
Mendes and Pedro Porro both saw yellow during the late stages, with things getting very intense.
The shootout saw Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa save a spot kick attempt from Spanish striker Alvaro Morata before Ruben Neves scored to seal the deal.
