Team USA women’s soccer great Megan Rapinoe doesn’t back down from anybody.
Rapinoe is standing by what she said in 2019.
“You cannot win championships without the gays,” she said to her wife, Sue Bird, during their “A Touch More” podcast.
Rapinoe said something similar during Team USA’s Women’s World Cup title run in 2019 after a quarterfinal victory over France, the host country of that year’s tournament.
“Go gays!” Rapinoe said at the time. “You can’t win a championship without gays on your team – it’s never been done before, ever. That’s science, right there!
She also had something to say about Donald Trump at the time.
“I’m not going to the fucking White House,” Rapinoe flatly stated. “No fucking way will we be invited to the White House.”

At the time, Trump fired back with a warning to Megan Rapinoe to not “disrespect” her country: “Women’s soccer player, @meganrapino, just stated that she is ‘not going to the F … ing White House if we win’. Other than the NBA … teams love coming to the White House. I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!”
In the present time, Bird asked Rapinoe how it felt to play soccer during Pride Month, which prompted her to discuss her World Cup glory from six years ago.
“Our team was super gay in 2019,” Rapinoe responded. “A lot of us were out, a lot of our fans were gay, a lot of the other players were gay. First and easiest thing to ensure you have is gay players on our team.”
Rapinoe was one of five players who had come out alongside their coach, Jill Ellis. Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris, two of the team’s stars, were engaged at the time.
Megan Rapinoe Remains An Advocate For Transgender Athletes

Megan Rapinoe, a prominent soccer player, has been a vocal advocate for transgender rights and inclusion in sports.
She and Donald Trump do not agree on a lot of things, and this is one of the biggest differences between them.
Rapinoe has been a longtime advocate for the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports and has characterized the issue as being part of a larger effort to “legislate away people’s full humanity. “
Rapinoe was grilled about her stance on trans inclusion in girls’ and women’s sports as she rode in a Pride parade with her partner Sue Bird in 2024.
“Your U.S. women’s soccer team famously lost to high school boys. Do you really think it’s fair for these same boys to be competing in girls’ sports?” a reporter asked.
Rapinoe mouthed, “Oh my God,” but never responded.
