North Macedonian soccer player Andrej Lazarov tragically lost his life in a devastating nightclub fire, but not before saving others.
The 25-year-old FC Skopje player was among hundreds inside the overcrowded venue on Sunday night when a fire broke out during a live concert for the band DNK. He succumbed to smoke inhalation before he could make it out himself.
FC Skopje confirmed his passing in an emotional statement, hailing him as a hero.
“Like the heroic spirit he was, Lazarov lost his life trying to help others escape… showing courage and humanity until the very last moment.” The fire killed 59 people and left 155 injured, making it one of the deadliest tragedies in the region.
