Angel Reese has never been away from media talks.
Whether on the court, grabbing double-digit rebounds, or making headlines with bold branding moves, the Chicago Sky forward knows how to keep people talking. But her latest play, filing for a trademark on the term “Mebounds”, raises more eyebrows than applause.
Reese, who became a breakout star at LSU and quickly emerged as a household name in the WNBA, filed the trademark earlier this month. The move plays off her reputation for gobbling rebounds, which fueled her standout rookie season in 2024. But the timing couldn’t have been more awkward. Just days after filing, Reese hit a career low in rebounds and minutes during the Sky’s 107-86 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
Trademark Timing Sparks Debate

Reese’s bold branding step comes as she’s navigating an uneven start to her sophomore season. After averaging 13 points and 13 rebounds in 2024, she opened 2025, averaging just 9 points and 11 boards while shooting a shaky 30 percent from the field. Critics didn’t hold back, questioning whether it was too soon for the 22-year-old to brand herself off dominance she hasn’t consistently shown this year.

Still, the Baltimore native has shown flashes of turning things around. Over the past couple of weeks, she’s bumped her numbers to 11 points and 11 rebounds per game, with a much-improved shooting clip near 40 percent. She even notched her first career triple-double earlier this month, reminding fans why she became one of the league’s most talked-about rookies.

But Saturday’s blowout loss to Phoenix added more fuel to the fire. Reese tied her career low in rebounds and logged just 21 minutes, the fewest she’s ever played in a WNBA game. That performance, combined with the “Mebounds” news, created an awkward narrative that has some fans and analysts questioning her priorities.
The Sky, now sitting at 3-9, have plenty of problems to address, and Reese’s performance is just one of them. But as one of the faces of the franchise, she’ll need to back up her off-court moves with consistent impact between the lines. Reese has never been afraid to bet on herself- now, it’s time to prove the brand matches the game.
