ESPN’s Dick Vitale has criticized WNBA players for what he reckons is jealousy, following one of the league’s most significant recent developments.
The 2025 All-Star starters were unveiled this week. Caitlin Clark, an All-Star in her rookie year, was named captain of the East, and Napheesa Collier was selected captain of the West.
While fans are highly appreciative of Clark, WNBA players have left no doubt that they don’t think much of her, as they voted her the ninth-best guard in the league. That is despite her clearly being the best shooter in the women’s game, who averages 19 points, nine assists, and five rebounds per contest.

Dick Vitale Slams The WNBA For Their Treatment Of Caitlin Clark

The player votes did not go down well with Vitale, and the college basketball analyst and broadcaster has taken to social media to slam WNBA players for what he says is “pure jealousy.”
“Absolutely PURE JEALOUSY that @WNBA players voted Caitlin Clark the 9th best guard . Some day they will realize what she Has done for ALL of the players in the WNBA . Charted planes – increase in salaries-sold out crowds – improved TV Ratings,” Vitale tweeted.
The post is not without merit, given that Clark is by far the most popular player in the WNBA, and ratings have seen a massive drop as a result of her injuries this season. She received 1,293,526, way more than the closest vote-getter, Bueckers (805,471).
While Caitlin Clark is a favorite among fans, her peers don’t hold her in such high regard, and it’s getting harder to hide.
