It started with a snub, and now it’s turned into a firestorm. Cheryl Reeve, head coach of the Minnesota Lynx and Team USA’s women’s basketball squad, is catching serious heat over her handling of Caitlin Clark’s Olympic omission, and her social media activity isn’t helping her case.
Clark, who’s become the face of the WNBA in her rookie season, didn’t make the cut for the 2024 Olympic roster. The incident stunned fans, and now some are demanding Reeve’s resignation, citing what they see as a glaring conflict of interest.
Critics argue that Reeve’s dual role, as both a WNBA head coach and Olympic team boss, creates a messy overlap, especially after a few of her old tweets resurfaced.
Old Tweets, Fresh Outrage

In May 2024, Reeve tweeted: “The W is more than one player,” a clear shot at the overwhelming TV spotlight on Clark and the Indiana Fever. That single sentence has now snowballed into a bigger controversy, especially after Reeve’s involvement in final roster decisions came to light.
Though not on the Olympic selection committee, Reeve influenced the roster. Christine Brennan criticized her public remarks about Clark.
“How on earth is that okay with USA Basketball?” Brennan asked during an appearance on The Adam Gold Show. “Just stunningly bad behavior by Cheryl Reeve, tweeting about Caitlin Clark, blaming her for not having Minnesota Lynx games on TV.”

I’m going to say it right now. @cbrennansports book is going to rock the WNBA world. She’s not playing WNBA politics, it’s just no feelings reporting.

That wasn’t Reeve’s only pointed comment. In another resurfaced post, she responded to ESPN’s preseason WNBA power rankings, which listed Clark’s Fever in the top three, writing, “This. Is. A. Choice. #LynxDontFitTheNarrative.”
Fans haven’t stayed quiet. One wrote, “cheryl reeve going to bed smiling wide as fuck every night dreaming about the schemes she’s gon throw at caitlin like “finally a real challenge”“

Another added, “I will never give another dime to the Lynx organization.”
“Stunningly bad behavior by Cheryl Reeve” correct I will never give another dime to the Lynx organization & I know I’m not alone in that. Shame because it’s an easy drive up from Iowa but she was completely disrespectful to Caitlin last year. https://t.co/aFOsF7zR4M

The backlash comes as tensions around Clark continue to boil over. This week, Clark took a hard foul from Connecticut Sun’s Marina Mabrey during a heated Commissioner’s Cup game. After several physical plays, a defender knocked the rookie guard to the floor, fueling concerns about her treatment across the league.
For now, Reeve remains in her dual role. But as the noise grows louder, USA Basketball may find itself forced to respond, and soon.
