Well, the first week of the 2023 XFL season certainly didn’t lack in entertaining finishes.
A day after the Arlington Renegades held on for a tight 22-20 win over the Vegas Vipers, the St. Louis Battlehawks and San Antonio Brahmas combined for a thrilling finish of their own.
The visiting Battlehawks were trailing 18-3 with just 90 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. They scored a late touchdown and made the three-point conversion attempt to make it an 18-12 game.
The XFL allows teams to attempt a 4th-and-15 conversion attempt instead of an onside kick in order to regain possession. The Battlehawks made the attempt and went ahead when A.J. McCarron found Austin Proehl for the go-ahead score in the waning seconds.
St. Louis would hold on for an unforgettable 18-15 victory. Not a bad way to kick off your season.
In case you’re wondering, yes Austin is the son of former St. Louis Rams star wide receiver Ricky Proehl. Austin fittingly found his way onto another St. Louis-based football team and left his mark early.
The XFL shut down in 2001 after one season but was relaunched by WWE chairman Vince McMahon in 2018. The XFL opened its doors again in 2020, but the season was shut down early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, business partner Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital Partners founder Gerry Cardinale bought the XFL before it could enter auction and were able to get the league started up again less than three years later.WANT MORE FROM TOTALPROSPORTS? FOLLOW US ON GOOGLE NEWS.
