Carolina Panthers Have An Option To Cut Cam Newton For Basically Nothing
Cam Newton is clearly the star quarterback of the Carolina Panthers over the past few years, but he did he suffer a shoulder injury which took him out of the 2018 season prematurely.
Because of that, the team went out and drafted QB Will Grier in the 2019 NFL Draft. If the team actually decided that Cam’s shoulder might not be quite right, the franchise could actually part ways with him in 2019 and it won’t cost them much even though he still has $44.3 million left on his contract.
If you think Cam was upset by the pick, he put those rumors to rest last week:
“I reached out to Will,” Newton said. “I actually saw Will play in high school with him being in Charlotte, and I’m just excited. Like I said, for him to come on a team that I know he possesses a rare talent, and I’m excited. It’s my job to put myself and my team in the best situation, and to get everybody ready. I want to make sure that I’m my best teammate and my best self for everyone.”
The Grier pick might have raised some eyebrows around the league, but it definitely made sense due to Cam’s shoulder and the uncertainty he might not be ready for the start of the 2019 season.
In the past three seasons where Newton has started all 16 games, Carolina has gone 11-5 (2017), 15-1 (2015) and 12-4 (2013).
