‘Robot Umpire’ Helps Call Balls & Strikes in Atlantic League All-Star Game (VIDEO)

Could robot umpires be a thing of the future?

If you’re one of those fans who have grown tired of umpires blow ball and strike calls, we have some good news for you.

On Wednesday night, a “robot” umpire called the Atlantic League All-Star game and it will eventually expand to all eight teams in the league using the system for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Because the system is still in its infancy, an umpire is needed behind home in the event that the system fails to pick up a pitch, registers a pitch totally incorrectly or fails altogether.

There is, however, a brief delay between when the pitch is caught and when the call is signaled.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

The program used player data to formulate a strike zone for each hitter, but because of the lack of information that was on hand for the system, a generic, 6-foot-2 strike zone was implemented.
