After amassing a record of 21 wins and 1 loss in the UFC, Jon Jones refrained from returning to the 205-pound division for three years. He made a swift comeback at heavyweight, securing a submission victory over Ciryl Gane to clinch the vacant title at UFC 285.
Recently, Jones responded sarcastically to Jan Blachowicz’s claims that he avoided the light heavyweight division out of fear of defeat. Despite engaging in verbal sparring on social media, the two former champions have never faced each other in the octagon.
Jon Jones’ Retort to Former Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz
Just a week after defending his light heavyweight title at UFC 247 in February 2020, Jon Jones witnessed Jan Blachowicz’s knockout win over Corey Anderson. Soon after, Jones vacated his belt, leading to Blachowicz’s title win against Reyes at UFC 253. Blachowicz defended his title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 259 but lost to Glover Teixeira at UFC 267.
In a recent interview with Fanatics View, as reported by MMA News, the 41-year-old Polish fighter implied that the reason ‘Bones’ moved up to the heavyweight division was because he was afraid of facing defeat against him.
Balchowicz said, “I would like to see him fight against Aspinall and Pereira and me. He escaped to heavyweight because I was in my prime when he left. He knew that if he meet me, he’s going to lose. That was his best decision, to go to heavyweight.”
Blachowicz is recovering from double shoulder surgery, and his latest fight resulted in a split-decision loss to Alex Pereira at UFC 291 in July 2023. Meanwhile, Jones is contemplating a UFC comeback, focusing on the heavyweight division. However, it remains to be seen if Jones will potentially move up in weight to face Blachowicz. Only time will reveal his decision.
