The Golden State Warriors are entering the 2022-23 NBA season looking to defend their NBA title. You’d think they’d be in a great mood during training camp coming off a championship, but apparently that hasn’t entirely been the case.
On Wednesday, it was reported that forward Draymond Green punched teammate Jordan Poole at practice during a fight — which began after the two players were trash-talking one another for a while.
Green apologized for the incident on Thursday and will not be allowed to rejoin the team until Saturday. The Warriors are still figuring out how to punish the outspoken veteran, which they plan to do internally.
Footage has since emerged of the fight, and it shows the two players exchanging words before coming face to face and shoving one another. Then, suddenly, Green lunges at Poole with a punch that sent the guard to the ground. At that point, the entire team can be seen getting between the two players to break things up.
Warriors general manager Bob Meyers spoke to reporters about the incident on Thursday, saying that while they don’t like it, stuff like this unfortunately happens and the players have all moved on.
He also stated that Green apologized to the team, and Poole was in the room at the time. As for punishments, we may never know what the team decides to do as they plan to keep it internal.
“These things happen. Nobody likes it, we don’t condone it, but it happens,” Myers said. “Draymond apologized to the team. Jordan was there in the room. … As far as any suspension, punishment, fine, we will handle that internally.”
One thing Meyers did say about the punishment is that he doesn’t expect it to cost Green any games this season. So you can probably expect him and Poole to be out there together when the Warriors open their season at home against the Lakers on October 18.
