Michael Bennett recently got traded from the New England Patriots to the Dallas Cowboys, but it looks like it might be a one-and-done type of season for him with the franchise. Not because he might go on to another team, but because he’s thinking about hanging up his cleats for good.
Finally addressing the media nearly a month after his arrival to Dallas, the veteran defensive end discussed many topics that included possible retirement.
“I don’t know. This could be my last year in the NFL,” Bennett told reporters Monday, following Dallas’ 28-24 loss to the Vikings, per The Athletic. “Could be thinking about what’s the best thing for my family, what’s the best thing healthwise and my future. Just take it one game at a time, one year at a time.”
Bennett, who is in his 11th season and his 5th team, restructured his contract to become an unrestricted free agent in 2020 after getting traded to the Cowboys. Him no longer being a starter might be a contributing mindset to retirement, not to mention, he has earned nearly $60 million in his career while playing in three Pro Bowls and already winning a Super Bowl. He has nothing else left to prove.
“Everybody loves the Cowboys around the country. I grew up watching the Cowboys, Alvin Harper, Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, all those guys,” he said, per The Athletic. “It’s honor to be able to play for an organization that you grew up in Houston being able to see.”
Bennett has recorded five tackles, a sack and six quarterback hits in two games since joining the Cowboys
He turns 34-years-old on Wednesday.
