Just in case you thought kneeling during the National Anthem was over and done with, Eric Reid is going to remind you that it’s making a return in 2019.
Eric Reid, who famously joined former teammate Colin Kaepernick in kneeling during the national anthem before San Francisco 49ers games and was part of a now-settled collusion lawsuit against the NFL, plans to continue his protest for the upcoming season.
Unlike Kaepernick — Reid was eventually signed by an NFL team, signing with the Panthers during the 2018 season and playing well enough to receive a three-year deal with the Panthers.
Reid did an interview with Scott Fowler of The Charlotte Observer and made it clear he will continue to kneel until the nation deals with social injustice.
“If a day comes that I feel like we’ve addressed those issues, and our people aren’t being discriminated against or being killed over traffic violations, then I’ll decide it’s time to stop protesting,” Reid told the Observer. “I haven’t seen that happen.”
“It feels like we’re going backwards,” Reid said. “You’d like to think we’re past certain things, the way we treat people. I thought we were at a time where you love your neighbor as yourself. But as I’ve studied history — it hasn’t repeated itself necessarily, but it’s dressed a little different and is acting the same.”
The 27-year-old safety recorded 71 tackles with one sack and one interception in 13 games for the Panthers in 2018.
