The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to hand Diontae Johnson a contract extension, and because of that lack of movement, trade speculations have arose.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report is now suggesting a “firework” trade package with the Dallas Cowboys.
BR says the Steelers are in “rebuild mode” which removes them from Super Bowl contention. The Steelers would send the Pro Bowl wideout to Dallas, and in return, would receive a second-round pick.
“While wideout Diontae Johnson would help the Steelers’ next quarterback tremendously — he had 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns this past season — his Pittsburgh future is uncertain,” offers Knox.
“Dallas is talented enough to make a Super Bowl push in the NFC but could use another veteran receiver to remain in the upper echelon,” adds Knox, having noted that Dallas traded Amari Cooper and lost Cedrick Wilson Jr. earlier in the offseason.
Johnson is coming off the best season of his career after racking up 1,161 receiving yards and eight touchdowns off 107 receptions.
“Adding Johnson would help ensure that Dallas’ top-ranked offense keeps rolling. The Steelers, meanwhile, would get more in return than they would by losing Johnson for a compensatory pick in 2023 free agency,” Knox writes.
Pittsburgh would likely get a third-round comp pick in the 2024 NFL Draft if Johnson doesn’t re-sign with the team.
However, the biggest reason this deal wouldn’t happen is that Gallup is on a $57 million contract that runs through the 2026 season and the Cowboys will want to save money to extend Lamb.
However, Jerry Jones wants to win and do it right now.
