The NFL has suspended three players for the entire 2023 season (and possibly longer) for violating the league’s policy on gambling.
The Colts announced soon after that they have waived both Rodgers and Berry.
As well, Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere has been suspended six games for gambling violations, per Schefter. Petit-Frere said in a statement that he did NOT place bets on NFL games.
Former Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for gambling violations. He was subsequently traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars and has been reinstated for the 2023 season.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was also recently handed a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. He will be eligible to return for the Lions’ Week 7 road game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Sports betting began to skyrocket across the U.S. back in 2018, when the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), which had made sports betting illegal in most parts of the nation.
The Supreme Court ruled that the PASPA was a violation of the Tenth Amendment. To date, more than 30 U.S. states have launched a fashion of legalized sports betting.
