Cam Newton was working in a 7-on-7 drill against the Eagles’ defense when Philly safety K’Von Wallace took a shot at him within earshot of NJ.com’s Mike Kaye.
“Checkdown king!” Wallace yelled at Newton.
The New England Patriots quarterback will need to show more than just checkdowns if he wants to secure the starting role. He noted on Monday that head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t told him he’ll start the regular-season opener Sept. 12 against the Miami Dolphins.
“No. You know he hasn’t said that. So for you to just ask that question, you know, it is what it is,” Newton said after the Patriots’ practice with the Philadelphia Eagles at the NovaCare Complex. “Every single day, I’m coming out here with the anticipation to just get better, and that’s the only thing that I can do. So I can control that.”
During the Patriots’ preseason-opening 22-13 win over the Washington Football Team on Thursday, Cam started the game and played 12 snaps over two drives, one of which culminated in a field goal. He finished 4-of-7 for 49 yards.
