Officiating has been so bad this year that it feels like the league put replacement refs back in and never told us.
Shawn Hochuli, the son of legendarily jacked referee Ed Hochuli, seems to love getting his camera time, which is what he did during the Bucs-Rams game. Tom Brady was extremely upset about a hit from Von Miller that drew blood from his lip, so he let the ref know about it.
In the midst of him barking at the ref, Hochuli gave Brady the first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of his 22-year NFL career.
After the game, the ref confirmed he threw the penalty because Brady became aggressive and abusive.
“Referee Shawn Hochuli via pool report on the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Bucs QB Tom Brady in today’s game: “He got in my face in an aggressive manner and used abusive language. As for the hit, we did not think that it rose to the level of roughing the passer.”
Brady came back to complete a 19-yard pass on the next play but the drive ended in Ryan Succop missing a 48-yard field goal attempt. That would hurt them badly in the end when they came back from a 27-3 deficit, only to lose by a late field goal.
