Olympic sprinter Shavez Hart has been shot dead after trying to break up an argument outside a nightclub.
The former Texas A&M star was tragically shot and killed in the Bahamas over the weekend.
“The [police] report states a group of males got into a physical altercation in the parking lot when one male — who left and returned with a gun — opened fire, hitting Hart in the chest,” TMZ wrote.
Hart, who competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and has a wife and son, was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He would have turned 30 today.
The NCAA and SEC gold medalist at Texas A&M competed for his native Bahamas in the 100m dash, as well as the 4×400 relay.
“The Olympic family is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Shavez Hart, a proud native of Abaco,” the Bahamas Olympic Committee said in a statement. “He was always very humble, yet proud and determined to offer the very best of himself for the sake of country.”
Hart’s mother, Shammaine Hart, told the Nassau Guardian: ‘He was such a good son – very quiet and always helpful. He did a lot of work in the community and was always trying to give back. I will certainly miss him.’
A suspect has reportedly been arrested an investigation is ongoing.
