No one man should have all that power, but apparently Cristiano Ronaldo does.
Coca-Cola’s market value dropped by $4 billion on Monday after Cristiano Ronaldo snubbed their drinks and then picked up a bottle of water and said, “Água!” – the Portuguese word for water.
Coca-Cola’s shares, which had opened at about $56.17, had fallen by 1.6%, to $55.22, by the end of the press conference. Its market value dropped by $4 billion, to $238 billion from $242 billion.
Coca-Cola, who is one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, responded in a statement that “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” with different “tastes and needs.”
A Euro 2020 spokesperson said: “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences.” They added that without the support of brands like Coca-Cola, “we could not organise a tournament with such success for players and fans, nor invest in the future of football at all levels.”
The Juventus forward struck twice in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary in what was his record fifth tournament appearance. In doing so, the 36-year-old became the leading scorer in European Championship history with 11 goals.
