It really is sad that, in today’s world, something like this happening almost seemed inevitable.
Following England’s heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Italy in the 2021 UEFA Euro Cup Finals, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka were all subjected to racial abuse on social media. The three players, who are all black, were target by English supporters on Twitter and Instagram after missing their respective penalty kick attempts during last night’s final at Wembley Stadium. Italy would go on to win the penalty shootout, 3-2.
After hearing about the racial abuse towards the three England players, Price William took to Twitter to issue the following statement:
“I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour. It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable. W”
After remaining deadlocked at 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, last night’s game became just the second in Euro Cup history to be decided in penalty kicks. England took control early after scoring on their first two attempts and watching goalkeeper Jordan Pickford stop Andrea Belotti. But Rashford, Sancho and Saka proceeded to miss the next three penalties for England, while Italy scored twice more to secure the victory.
Rashford and Sancho were both brought into the match during the final minutes of extra time. They were subbed in by England coach Gareth Southgate solely for their purpose of taking the penalties — making their misses that much harder to stomach for English supporters.
England’s official Twitter account also issued a statement regarding the racist messages towards the players:
According to TMZ, metro police are aware of the messages and are currently investigating. They called the abuse, “totally unacceptable,” and have said that “it will not be tolerated and it will be investigated.”WANT MORE FROM TOTALPROSPORTS? FOLLOW US ON GOOGLE NEWS.
