The United States survived a huge scare against Portugal, limping through to the knockouts. A lot of criticism has come their way for how poorly they played and their reaction after the match did not help as many of them could be seen dancing and smiling afterward.
The United States women’s national team needed only to avoid defeat against Portugal to advance to the knockout phase of the Women’s World Cup, but they did so at the bare minimum with that shocking 0-0 draw.
Despite playing so poorly, a ton of people still tuned in to watch the ladies in action.
According to FOX, 1,354,000 viewers watched the game, which set a record for the most-watched overnight broadcast in the network’s history. The ratings peaked at 1,731,000 million from 4:45 to 5 a.m.
No nation has ever won three consecutive World Cups in either the men’s or women’s game, and if the women continue to play as they have been, they will make sure that stat remains the same.
This US Women’s National Team still has a path to do something great, but it is going to take some extremely hard work and dedication to get it done. Their quest begins with an elimination game against Sweden.
It’s going to be a very early game.
Sunday’s game starts at 5 a.m. ET on FOX.
