Few topics have sparked as much outrage and internet debate as Trey Lance’s arm. His throwing technique, purported “arm fatigue,” and ailments have made the No. 3 overall pick a living enigma.
He is certainly not a polished product, but can the 49ers afford to wait for him? This summer’s OTAs and training camp will play a significant role in determining his future.
Lance has reportedly made some modifications as of now.
Christensen revealed to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows that Lance has made changes to his throwing motion and even worked out with Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
“I said, ‘Watch this. Watch what he does here,’” Christensen told Barrows. “It was something I was telling him to do that he wasn’t quite doing, and then he saw Patrick apply it perfectly. And I think that visual buy-in, that mental buy-in, helped him past that mental hump.”
Kyle Shanahan said last week that his mechanics are “the best” they’ve ever been.
Lance will have to battle with Sam Darnold if he’s to reclaim the No. 2 job and potentially push to take back a starting role.
Lance may still start the 2023 season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. After effectively replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in 2022, fellow youngster Brock Purdy is widely regarded as the front-runner for QB1 duties. Purdy, on the other hand, is coming off a significant elbow injury, and Shanahan has voiced confidence in Lance’s potential to be the franchise’s long-term face.
